Density is a measure of how much mass is contained in a given volume of matter. It is an intensive property, meaning it does not depend on the amount of matter present. The formula for density is mass divided by volume (ρ = m/V). Different substances have different densities, which is why some objects float while others sink. For example, water has a density of 1 gram per cubic centimeter (g/cm³), which is why ice floats on water. Materials with higher densities are heavier for their size, while those with lower densities are lighter.

The melting point of a substance is the temperature at which it changes from a solid to a liquid state. This temperature is specific to each material and is an intensive property. When a substance reaches its melting point, the thermal energy provided is used to break the intermolecular forces holding the solid together, allowing the particles to move more freely and become a liquid. For instance, the melting point of ice is 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit), while the melting point of iron is 1538 degrees Celsius (2800 degrees Fahrenheit).

Similarly, the boiling point of a substance is the temperature at which it changes from a liquid to a gas state. Like the melting point, the boiling point is also an intensive property and is specific to each material. When a substance reaches its boiling point, the thermal energy provided is used to overcome the intermolecular forces between the liquid particles, allowing them to escape into the gas phase. The boiling point of water is 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit) at sea level. As altitude increases, the boiling point decreases due to the lower atmospheric pressure.

Understanding these three physical properties of matter helps us comprehend the behavior of various substances under different conditions. Density allows us to predict whether an object will float or sink, while the melting and boiling points provide insights into the phase transitions of materials. By studying these properties, scientists and engineers can design and create new materials with specific characteristics for various applications.
